The US Presidential Medal of Merit

General Donovan presenting Sir William Stephenson
with the U.S. Presidential Medal of Merit, November 1946.
(the highest honor bestowed upon a civilian, and the only non-U.S. citizen to receive this award),
Looking on are (left to right) Colonel Edwin Buxton, Assistant Director of the O.S.S.,
Robert Sherwood and Lady Stephenson.

At about this same time, General Donovan gave to Sir William a portrait of himself, inscribed:

"To Bill Stephenson whose friendship, knowledge and continuing assistance
contributed so richly to the establishment and maintenance
of our American intelligence service in World War II -- Bill Donovan"
